Choosing the Right Portable Heating Equipment: Forced Air, Radiant, and Direct-Fired Heaters

Posted by on

As the temperatures drop, choosing the right portable heating equipment is crucial for maintaining comfort in your workspace or home. With several types of portable heaters on the market, it's easy to get overwhelmed by options. Whether you need to keep a job site warm or heat a large, enclosed space, this guide will walk you through the key differences between Indirect-Fired, Radiant, and Direct-Fired heaters, and help you decide which one is the best fit for your needs.

What is Forced Air Indirect-Fired Heating?

Forced Air Indirect-Fired Heating is essentially a mobile furnace, designed to provide clean, efficient heating in larger spaces. Veloci's Blaze line of Indirect Forced Air heaters, manufactured in Italy, stands out for its innovative design and exceptional performance.

Unlike other heating methods, Indirect-Fired heaters have a separate internal chamber where the combustion process takes place. This isolates any combustion by-products, which are then expelled through a chimney, ensuring that the air released from the heater is 100% clean. This is particularly useful in environments where clean air is a priority, such as workshops, job sites, and even enclosed spaces.

One of the best-selling models, the Veloci Blaze 100, features a three-chamber design that captures more heat for the forced air to exchange, requiring a larger fan that increases output. With a high Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM) rating, the Blaze 100 moves significantly more clean air than many of its competitors. Compare it with any heater from a big-box store, and you'll see that Blaze units deliver clean heat at a much higher rate.

When choosing an Indirect-Fired Heater, consider the size of the space you're heating. Calculate the cubic feet of your area by measuring the length, width, and ceiling height. Larger spaces may benefit from the Blaze 200 or Blaze 300, which offer dual ducting options to heat multiple areas simultaneously. This allows you to pump clean heated air into a second location, bringing up the temperature quickly and efficiently.

Remember, the Thermal Rise listed for Veloci's Indirect-Fired heaters refers to how much the air temperature increases as it passes through the heater. For example, if the outside temperature is 50°F, a 95°F thermal rise from the Blaze 100 means the heater will output air at 145°F.

Radiant Heating: Heating Objects, Not Air

Radiant heating, also known as infrared heating, operates on the principle of heat transfer rather than heat exchange. Veloci's Fire and Flame heaters are Italian-made radiant units that are perfect for situations where direct heating of objects is more effective than heating the air.

These heaters have an internal burner that heats up a faceplate to approximately 1400°F. This heat is then radiated outwards in a conical shape, directly warming objects in front of it. This makes radiant heaters ideal for situations where you need to quickly warm up equipment, vehicles, or smaller outdoor areas.

Radiant heaters like the Fire and Flame models aren't typically used as space heaters since they focus on heating objects rather than the air itself. However, Veloci's radiant units are unique, featuring a hybrid design that includes an air pocket requiring forced air. This means they can heat objects while also providing a level of space heating, making them highly versatile.

With a 250 CFM air output, the Fire and Flame models may not move as much air as the Blaze series, but they efficiently circulate heat from both the heater’s face and other warmed objects in the vicinity. This can be especially effective for rapidly warming smaller areas or getting a focused heat where it’s needed most.

Direct-Fired Heating: An Option with Caution

Direct-Fired heaters offer the highest efficiency, with 100% combustion efficiency, making them a tempting choice for those on a budget. However, they come with significant drawbacks that make them unsuitable for many situations.

Direct-Fired units emit around 30-40 PPM of carbon monoxide, which can lead to discomfort and health issues like watery eyes, headaches, and fatigue when used in enclosed spaces. The exhaust from these units can also create lingering smells and purple haze, making them problematic for applications like drywall or painting.

For these reasons, Direct-Fired heaters should never be used in enclosed environments or near livestock. The risks of carbon monoxide buildup are too high, even for those units that operate on seemingly cleaner fuel types like propane or natural gas. Direct-Fired heaters are best suited for well-ventilated outdoor spaces where air circulation can prevent the accumulation of fumes.

Which Heater is Right for You?

Choosing the right portable heater depends on your specific needs:

  • If you require clean, breathable air in a large space, go with a Veloci Blaze Indirect-Fired Heater. These are perfect for work sites, construction, and anywhere that requires a warm environment without introducing combustion by-products.
  • If you need focused, direct heat to warm up objects or smaller outdoor areas, consider Veloci’s Fire and Flame Radiant Heaters. These units are ideal for specific applications like heating vehicles or work zones.
  • If you are working in a ventilated outdoor area and need a budget-friendly option, a Direct-Fired Heater may suit your needs, but exercise caution and never use it in an enclosed space.
